Warren Madden Buildig Move - External Q&A

In addition to these UHR offices, the ISU Payroll and Procurement teams are also relocating to the Warren Madden Building, and ISU Parking Services will also have a satellite office there.

The former Administrative Services Building was refurbished and was renamed in honor of longtime ISU administrator Warren Madden in the summer of 2025. The redesigned space in the Warren Madden Building provided the opportunity to bring many of the services and offices used by new employees, existing faculty and staff, and retirees under one roof.

This move brings together, in one convenient location, many of the key services and departments that our new employees, hourly student employees, graduate assistants, and retirees utilize for their initial appointment/hiring and retirement support.

No. Only the Service Center and Benefits staff are moving. Those are the two most customer-facing teams in UHR and are ideally suited to be in the Madden Building and the new Employment and Benefits Center. Other areas of UHR, including the Vice President for University Human Resources, Employee Relations/Labor Relations, HR Information Management, and ISU WorkLife, will remain in their current offices in Beardshear Hall.

UHR provides support and expertise on a wide range of topics. Our audiences are different based on our customers or specialty. The weather-induced flood in ASB in January 2024 created an opportunity to positively address some of the pain points in the volume of in-person traffic to the third floor of Beardshear. Those areas with high-touch in-person experience with our employees were prioritized for the move.

Form I-9 processing will take place in 3810 Beardshear Hall through Monday, September 8. Effective Tuesday, September 9, all Form I-9 processing will be done in the Employment and Benefits Center in the Madden Building. Form I-9 processing will not be available in Beardshear Hall after September 8.

Warren Madden, the namesake of the Warren Madden Building, retired from Iowa State University in 2016 following an illustrious 50-year career with the university. After graduating from ISU with an industrial engineering degree in 1961, he returned to the university as ISU contracts and grants officer in 1966. Over the next 50 years he served in a number of capacities, including his final position as senior vice president for business and finance. Madden’s office oversaw a vast portfolio: business operations, services, facilities, finance, public safety, environmental health and safety, Reiman Gardens, public radio, University Museums, and the Iowa State Center.

Among many contributions to the campus and Ames communities, Madden helped preserve several 19th-century structures and the central campus greenspace as the university grew, develop the Iowa State Center in the 1970s and expand campus utilities and the residence system. He collaborated with city leaders on town-gown initiatives such as CyRide and the ice arena, and coordinated major campus flood recovery in 1993, 2008 and 2010.

During his five-decade stint in Ames, he helped bring Hilton Coliseum, Stephens Auditorium, the ISU Research Park, and many other iconic facilities and programs to life. Nearly every university building was either built or renovated during Madden's 50-year career. The school's facility imprint grew from four million square feet when he started at Iowa State in 1966 to more than 14.3 million square feet when he retired in 2016.
